We are excited to announce that we are making some updates to our consent management framework, which will come into effect from February 16, 2023. These changes are designed to further ensure that we continue, not only to meet the highest industry requirements and data protection regulations, but also fulfill our obligations as data processors under the extant Nigeria Data Protection Regulations 2019(NDPR) and other applicable laws.

Changes include: 

  • Health Facilities will be required to initiate an OTP (One Time Password) to patients at the time of registration and check-in
  • Patients will be required to provide the OTP code received via SMS and/or email to the health facility to authenticate their consent
  • Patients will receive links to Helium Health’s privacy notice via SMS and/or email
  • Helium Health’s consent forms have been adapted to the age of the patient for the purpose of distinguishing between adults and children

Step-by-Step Guide for New Patients

  • Patient walks into the hospital
  • Hospital staff registers patient’s details into Helium Health’s EMR (“the EMR”)
  • Hospital staff checks the following consent options to complete the registration: a. Consent to direct marketing (optional) b. Consent for data processing (mandatory)
  • Hospital staff proceeds to authenticate consent by triggering OTP to the patient’s registered telephone number and/or email address
  • Patient receives an SMS and/or email with OTP code and a link to review the document being consented to
  • Patient gives hospital staff the OTP code received
  • Hospital staff enters OTP code on the EMR to complete patient’s registration
  • Patient receives a confirmation of consent via SMS and/or email
  • Registration is completed and patient can proceed to receive care

Step-by-Step Guide for Existing Patients

  • Patient walks into the hospital
  • Hospital staff request patient’s details and searches for patient’s records
  • Hospital staff proceeds to check-in
  • Hospital staff checks the following consent options to complete the registration: a. Consent to direct marketing (optional) b. Consent for data processing (mandatory)
  • Hospital staff proceeds to authenticate consent by triggering OTP to the patient’s registered phone number and/or email address
  • Patient receives an SMS and/or email with OTP code and a link to review the document being consented to
  • Patient gives hospital staff the OTP code received
  • Hospital staff enters OTP code on the EMR to complete patient’s registration
  • Patient receives a confirmation of consent via SMS and/or email
  • Registration is completed and patient can proceed to receive care
